Types Of Bricks

Building And Construction:: Brickwork

Common Bricks are generally cheap common purpose bricks (hence their name) used mainly for internal brickwork which is to be covered with a plaster coat, or alternatively to be rendered if used externally on any property. Common bricks are not generally colour matched so this needs to be taken into account if being considered for any project where the bricks may be visible.

Facing Bricks are considered suitable for exposed brickwork as they are frost resistant and stand up to heavy water penetration. Facing bricks are manufactured to a high specification both for structural reasons as well as appearance. They can be purchased in a wide range of finishes and colours as well as different textures.

Engineering Bricks these type of bricks are dense in structure and are very strong. Typically they are impervious to water and so can be used for building of damp proof courses in houses, factories, and buildings.

Descriptions

Frog: A depression on the brick which when filled with mortar bonds and keys them together.

Shaped: Supplied for building arches, chamfered walls, corners, and decorative paving and features.

Cored: Similar to the perforated bricks now available – cored bricks have holes throughout to allow bonding with mortar and cement.

Brick Cutting

Small construction jobs can be undertaken with the use of a builders trowel and brick hammer for the cutting of bricks. Larger tasks and engineering bricks will ultimately require the use of a professional cut off saw such as a stihl ts410. Powered by a two stroke petrol engine this type of power tool is both versatile and fast to use. Large quantities of bricks and stonework can be cut to size and with little operator effort required.
