Tools For Cutting Wood

There is a multitude of different types of saws suitable for cutting both soft and hard woods. For rough cutting of live timber the most popular type of saw used is the chainsaw.

A chainsaw is powered by battery, electric, or petrol as a power source and can typically cut through logs and timber from around 2″ diameter sized branches and sections in diameter up to 3′ depending on the strength of the saw and size of its cutting blade.

For occasional or light wood cutting use a battery or electric powered chainsaw is ideal. For regular tough work and large diameter branches and logs a petrol driven machine is the most suitable choice.

The wood cutting blades fitted to this type of powered machinery are usually tct or high speed steel. TCT (tungsten carbide) tipped blades have a longer life than high speed steel equivalents and are more cost effective as well.

A tct chain loop blade can typically outlast a hss one by a ratio of 5:1 or more provided it is well looked after. Cleaning, lubrication, sharpening, and tensioning is all that is required to extend the life of a chainsaws blade considerably.

You could say that this should be regarded as essentail maintenance for the chainsaw user yet these are tasks that are so often overlooked even by professional users such as gardeners, forestry workers, and landscapers.

A few minutes maintenance each day checking, tensioning, and lubricating the blade will pay off favourably in the longterm.

There are countless different manufacturers worldwide of chain saws.

Popular ones include Echo, Ryobi, Black and Decker, Makita, Kawasaki, Tanaka, and of course Stihl.

Each manufacturer has a range of different models aimed at their target customer market and type of user. This could be the home gardener that needs a saw for occasional pruning and trimming use, a landscaper or tree surgeon, or a forestry worker that needs a saw for daily use in the workplace.
